ACCC Chinese New Year Festival & Market Day at the ASB Showgrounds,
Halls 1 & 2, 217 Greenlane West, on Saturday, 13 February 2010 from 9.30 am
to 4.00 pm.
 
 
 

Auckland’s Chinese community gathers to help the city celebrate the start of the Year of the Tiger and the Chinese New Year on Saturday, 13 February 2010, at the ASB Showgrounds,
217 Greenlane West between 9.30am & 4.00pm.
 
This community event is open to all and admission is free for what promises to be a day full of colour and cultural entertainment. You can experience the excitement and the pageantry, sights, sounds and smells of a Chinese New Year celebration right in the heart of Auckland.
 
Although Auckland Chinese Community Centre Inc has been holding these festival for over 20 years, the organisers are planning a bigger and more interesting event next year for both young and the not so young with an enhanced range of activities and displays. Crowds of up to 20, 000 persons are expected in the biggest celebration of Chinese New Year in the Auckland City area.  Particular highlights will be :-
  • A 24 person Dragon Dance to start  proceedings in a traditional lively manner
  • Official Opening by the Prime Minister at 10.00am
  • A troupe of acrobatic performers from China courtesy of the the Chinese Government
  • Mu Yu Ming, a world famous portrait artist, living in Lijang, China
  • Dragon Soul, a local Hamilton band will play Chinese / Western fusion music
  • Tsegi, a circus skills trainer from Mongolia, giving hula hoops performances
  • Demonstrations of various martial arts & tai chi, hip hop and diabolo tricks
  • The E-PACS lion dance group consisting of 4 to 15 year old youngsters 
Halls 1 & 2 at the Showgrounds will be transformed into a lively market with nearly 200 specialist stores offering traditional New Year foods, arts and crafts, deer products and herbal medicines and toys and videos from the Far East plus a huge variety of other products and services including a special display of new cars from Audi. There will also be demonstrations of Chinese calligraphy, finger painting, kite making & paper cutting and the chance to win two return trips to China or Taiwan. 
 
On the indoor stage, besides the feature performances by the acrobats from China, cultural groups will provide a four hour concert of traditional dances and music and other entertainment. Whilst outside there will be the Chinese fusion band, and demonstrations of martial arts, tai chi, hip hop dancing and diabolo tricks on the front broadwalk, lucky prizes, and  amusement rides and other activities for children.
 
Another popular attraction is the sampling of exotic and traditional Chinese delicacies and food from Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and other Asian countries  from over 50 outdoor hot food stalls.

This is our 9th Japan Day coincide with 20th Anniversary of The Japanese Society of Auckland Inc.
